Deceleration-stage Rayleigh–Taylor growth in a background magnetic field studied in cylindrical and Cartesian geometries

Experiments have identified the Rayleigh–Taylor (RT) instability as one of greatest obstacles to achieving inertial confinement fusion. Consequently, mitigation strategies reduce RT growth and fuel–ablator mixing in hotspot during deceleration phase implosion are great interest. In this work, effect seed magnetic fields on deceleration-phase studied planar cylindrical geometries under conditions relevant National Ignition Facility (NIF) Omega experiments. The magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) resistive-MHD capabilities FLASH code used model imploding cylinders blast-wave-driven targets. Realistic target laser parameters presented that suggest occurrence morphological differences late-time evolution NIF case a measurable difference spike height single-mode case. results study indicate need for designs utilize an RT-unstable foam–foam interface order achieve sufficient field amplification alter evolution. Benchmarked simulations these effects both resistive ideal MHD.
